The role played by dogs in transmiting Leishmaniasis to man in Egypt

Abstract:
Dogs play an import.nt role as hosts of zoonotic parasites transmitted to man due to its intimate contact with them • They are as well the chief host of Leish1ania parasites of both cutaneous and visceral formsThis work aimed to detect the prevalence of leistuDania— sis in dogs and man, by the aid o:t microscopical exaraimtion of splenic impression nears frcfl dogs, and culturing on suitable media and I.H.A,. test of human and dog sera, which is specific and seHuman and dog saples for this study were collected from Cairo, Gin. and klexandria governorates . Besides sern from foreign individuals came to EgyptIn the present investigation, it was revealed thatLe ishaa nia infect ion do e xs i t am ong d og s in certa In local - ities of EgyptIn dogs , 37 blood samples were collected from le.ndria , 165 from Cairo and 216 from Giza governorates. Three ( 8.11 % ) , five C 3.03 % ) and nine dogs ( 4.17 % ) gave a positive reactions with indirect Iiaeinagglutixt iontest, respectively . The titres obtained were ranged between 1/32 to 1/1024 . In (izi governorate, 5 C 7.35 % ) out of68 splenic smears eamim.tion, revealed the ainastigotes. Trials for isolation of the parasites on Tanabe’s liquid medium was successful in only two cases one rrcn Polaq El-Dakror and tne other fran Kafr Ha kern districtsIn Cairo governoate, 2 C 5.88 % ) out of 34 splenic smears examination, revealed the parasites, these two. cases have been shot at El4’1o.tam district • We failed to isolate any parasites on Tanabe’s medianIn human, 157 blood .rnples were collected frcn .iro governorate , 304 frcn Alendrla governorate , 33 Egyptians came from Arabic countries and 55 from Arabian people.
