Abstract:
In tnis investigation, preliminary phy- tccacai,c alscreeninc:; was carried out on the roots and Leaves of Betavulgsris plant. This revealed th~t they cGntain saponins, alkaloids and/or nitro6enous bases, carbohydrates and/orglycosides, tannins, sterols and resins. The roots and leaves of the plant are free from volatile compouLds, fla- vonoids and anthraquinones.Eichhornia crassipes plant contains sterols, carbo- hJdrates and/or glycosides and resins but free from alkaloids and/or nitrogenous bases, saponins, tannins, volatilecompounds, flavonoids and anthraq~inonesoThe saponins of Beta vulgaris roots and leaves as well asthe sterols of Eichhornia crassipes plants were separated and identified by Thin-l~er chromatographic technique~The diffe~ent pharmacological effects of the alcoholic extracts of Beta vulgaris and Ewere s t ud i.ed , In addition, some pharmacological effectsof the saponin isolated from the roots and leaves of Beta mlgaris plant were also investigatedo
