Abstract:
1. A total of 250 samples of pathological material, 227 from cattle and 23 from buffaloes whose death wasattributed to blackleg, was examined bacteriologically.identification was made by cultural, and biochemical characteristics and pathogenicity and protection tests.2. Out of the 250 samples; Cl. chauvoeiwas isolated from 210, Cl. septicumfrom 7 and Cl. welchiifrom 4.There was no mixed infection of Clostridia.3. The percentage of Cl. chauvoei isolation from cattle specimens (86.3) was higher than from buffalo specimens (60.8).4. A total of 115 samples of surface and deep soil was examined for the presence of Cl. chauvoei; 55 samplesfrom farms during an outbreak of blackleg, 37 from farms with previous history of the disease and 23 from farms with no history of the disease. Three methods of isolat- ion were tried; spore selection, cultuping on medium containing antibiotics and guinealast proved to be the best •
