Toxicological studies on vicia faba in laboratory animals

Summary:-The Vicia faba Rebaya 40 beans obtained from theLeiSume Hesearc.h Section, Department of Agriculture,.!.v1inistry of Agriculture Giza, were of the 1970 crop andsubjected to toxico-pharmacological studies. The resultsobtained are summarized as follows:(1) The relative moisture, fat, ash, acid insolubleash, total nitrogen and c ru de protein content ofthe air-dried powdered endospermal part of Vici~faba Rebaya 40 were found to be 10.182, 0.85,3.12,1.929, 4.508 and 28.205 % respectively. ’The preli-minary chemical investigation revealed the presenceof alkaloidal and glucosidal constituentp as wellas sugars.(2) The l\•i.L.D. and L .D50 for the alcoholic extract ofthe endosperm of Rebaya 40 beans, intraperitoneallyinjected were found to be about 2475 and 2512 mg/100 g body weight and 3992 and 4046 mg/lOO g bodyweight in mice and rats respectively.(3) The.chronic toxicological effect of the extract on
