Abstract:
’I’he grevid uteri of 70 Egyptian buffaloes were used inthe course of the present study. They were taken at differentstages of pregnancy from the second month till full term. These specimens were used for both histological and histo-che~ical examinations. Our results can be summarized asfollows :1) The c ar-uncu l ar- epithelial lining is intact during Lmp Lanti-.ation.2) The term 11 c horio-passive ” given by BJORKI”lAN (1954) inbovines is uite adequate for the E~yptian buffalo forreasons discussed in the text.3) The type of placentation in the buffalo is discussed indetails and the term cotyledonary villus epithelio-chorialis ~enerally accepted.4) The giant cells are observed in both the foetal tropho-blastic and maternal epithelium.5) The full term placentome lost its arch1texture. the foetalblood vessels develop special regulatory devices, and boththe foetal and maternal structures show degenerativec hange s , These c hange s occur prior to the separation ofplacenta at full term. •6) The syndesmo-chorial type is limited only in small partsof intercaruncular areas.7) The glycogen is.existin~ in the endometrial glands duringthe first half of pregnancy_ This SUbstance serves as anaV8ilcble source of nutrition for the growing foetusduring this period.
