Abstract:
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) i. a widly .i.tribute. plantallover the world. In the last two aecaaes the plant notonly used as a spioe and food but also useQ as a rnQaicinalplant, a. in caSQ of hyperoholesterolemia~ treatment oftumours and rhomatic pain. Garlio ~lso exhibited a baotericoi-dal and fungicicl~l properties.Considering the expoeure of livestock. to garlio in thefeili ana the newly use of it as treatment for ~oth human&ne animal, the aeterminatioA of lethalties, toxic effect.leading t. its safty margin evaluation was the aim of ourstudy.The plant was extracted using two solvents (hexane andethanol)where the hexana extract only being toxio to the animals.The hexane extraot wa. fractionatea using column chromato-graphy and ecreeing by TLC. The re.ult was three main frac-tions A, B ane C.Toxicelogical investigation were oarried out on 1112male albiao mioe with average wight ranging fFom 20-35 gm.Mioe were acclimatized tG laboratory condition. four week.before testing.Ourresultll indicated that the LD50ofthe crude hexane ext.r ao tanaits three fractions were 350 (330.J to 370.76~!Ilg/kg.b.w.of.hexane extract,312.5 (276.54 t~ 353.12)lIg/kg. b s w ,of fraotion At255(277.95 to 233.95) mg/kg.b.w.
