Abstract:
A total of 630 samples were collected from nasal cleft, trachea and nasopharynx from apparently healthyfowl, turkeys and ducks (not less than 3 months old). At the same time, 58 samples were obtained from lesionsof chronic fowl cholera from adult mature chickens and turkeys. All such samples (687) were examined bacterio-logically for isolation of Pasteurella multocida either by direct cultivation on 5% blood agar and modified Dasmedia or by the injection of suspensions of 4 to 6 hours old broth from the samples or lesions into mice or rabbits, which were used for isolation, purification and resolutionof the organism. The incidence of total recovery rate was 9.46% where 65 cases were positive for Pasteurella either byisolation and killing of the injected mice or by the prescence of typical bipolarity in the smears preparedfrom heart blood of the injected animal. Swabs from nasopharynx from poultry carriers showed the highestisolation rate where the incidence was 7 44% and followed by that of nasal cleft in an incidence of 4.52%.
