Abstract:
A series of experiments, in vivo and in vitro were carried out by light and electron microscopy to invest-igate the effect of Toxoplasma gondii on the individual cells and on the infected animals as well.In vitro, Macrophages arid Hela cell cultures were inoculated with Toxoplasma RH strain and electronmicroscopic studies of both cultures have been done at lOm, 30m,275,15,24,48 and 72 hours post inoculation. The results obtained indicates that the parasites, enter the Hela cells and macrophages by an active pene-tration of the cell membrane immediatly after inoculat- ion of the cultures. The paraSites penetrate the hostcell by its anterior end.It was found too that macrophages phagocytised some organisms •The cytopathic effect of the parasite on Hela cells and macrophages were demonstrated within 5- 15 hours post inoculation. The chwLges were degenerati-on of mitochondria, swelling of golg:i.. apparatus and widening of endoplasmic reticulum indicating intr
