The Effectiveness of a Program Based on Some Reading

Abstract:
The current study aimed at developing some literary appreciation andliteracy skills for freshmen EFL students at the Faculty of SpecificEducation. Thus the problem of the study was stated in this question”what’s the effectiveness of a program based on some reading and writingstrategies for teaching English poetry in developing EFL students’ literaryappreciation and literacy skills at the faculty of Specific Education?”.The study has adopted quasi-experimental method. The participants were160 students randomly drawn from their community during the academicyear 2009-2010, and were randomly classified into two groups: the controlgroup (N= 80) that received the regular instruction, and the experimental(N= 80) that received the suggested program based on some reading andwriting strategies. The instruments of the study were (a) a literaryappreciation skills test, and (b) a literary literacy skills test. Theseinstruments based upon two questionnaires validated by a panel of jury.Then, the suggested program was developed by the researcher and taughtover a period of three months. The instruments were administered pre-postteaching the program. The results showed that the overall literaryappreciation and literacy skills and sub-skills have been developed; thusthe study hypotheses have been approved.Key Words: Reading and Writing Strategies, Teaching English Poetry Literary Appreciation, and Literary Literacy Skills.
