Abstract:
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONThere are several incidences that a patient may suffer with more than one disease at a time. It is a need to treat all his ailments simultaneously. Hence it may require administering more than one drug at a time. In such instances, the potential for drug interactions is therefore substantial and polypharmacy is an important factor to be considered when prescribing for a prolonged period. The current study has been carried out to study the possible pharmacological interactions that may result from the concurrent administration of an oral hypoglycemic agent (glipizide) with three antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin, carbamazepine and topiramate) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In addition, nifedipine and cimetidine were used to give an insight about the probable mechanism of interactions between glipizide and antiepileptic drugs.Metabolic parameters measured were, blood glucose, serum insulin, and K+, Na+ and Ca+2 levels. The liver glycogen content and brain GABA content were also determined. These parameters were estimated seven consecutive days post-treatment.
