Abstract:
SUMMARY Many plants have enjoyed a long history of serving as a source of potentially useful medicinal agents. The current study deals with two plants belonging to families Loganiaceae and Leguminosae. In addition, the biological activities of the different extracts and some pure isolates were determined through some pharmacological, pathological and antimicrobial screening methods. This study consists of two main parts:Part I: Phytochemical study and biological activity of Buddleia asiatica Lour. family Loganiaceae (recently classified under family Scrophulariaceae).Part II: Phytochemical study and biological activity of Medicago intertexta Heyn. var. ciliaris. family Leguminosae. The study of both plants aims to:1. Preliminary chemical screening of the powdered plants.2. Isolation and characterization of the compounds isolated from the different parts of the plants using the chromatographic and spectroscopic methods.3. Biological screening of some extracts of the plants to reveal the possible biological benefits of the plants used in this study.Part IPhytochemical study and biological activity of Buddleia asiatica Lour. family Loganiaceae. The plant materials divided into two parts; one consists of the flowering branches and the other comprises the roots. Both parts were extracted with ethyl alcohol (96%). After defeating extract was chromatographed over a silica gel column and several fractions were obtained as follows:A- The flowering branches contained three main fractions:1. Fraction I: chloroform: methanol (3:1):from this fraction, three compounds were isolated:1. Mixture of β.sitosterol and stigmasterol.2. 3- β-OH-Olean-12-ene-28-oic-28- β-O-glucoside.3. Mixture of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol -O-glucosides.2. Fraction II: chloroform: methanol (1:1):Four compounds were isolated from this fraction:4. 6-O- (3”,4”-Dimethoxy cinnamoyl) catalpol.5. Methyl ajugol.6. β -sitosterol-O-glucoside.7. Isoacteoside.3. Fraction III: methanol (100%):Nine compounds were isolated, and they are:8. Methyl catalpol.9. Catalpol.10. Acteoside.11. α, β. aucubin.12. Mimengoside –A.13. Diosmin.14. Linarin.15. Mannitol.16. Sucrose.B- from 100% chloroform fraction of the root: one compound was isolated: 17. Buddledin-B.The identity of the isol
