Effect of Some Plant Extracts on Ischaemia

Renal I/R is a common problem experienced during aortic surgery, renal transplantation or during cardiovascular anesthesia, leading to renal dysfunction and injury.It is believed that renal I/R insult results in both renal and non-renal injury. This injury is mediated through oxidative/nitrosative stress. Moreover, proinflammatory cytokines, as well as adhesion molecules are involved in the injury.Since herbal remedies have a widespread administration and most of drugs in modern pharmacopeia are derived from natural sources, it is interesting to investigate the beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of some plant extracts (aqueous garlic extract “AGE” and alcoholic Zizyphus spina-christi extract “AZSCE”) on the injury induced by renal I/R.
