Abstract:
In the present work, a trial was undertaken to investigate the activity of mebeverine Hcl,.a commonly used antispasmodic drug, and its metabolite, veratric acid, against experimentally-induced epilepsy. The study extended to investigate the activity of another structurally related antispasmQdic drug, drotaveline Hcl, against experimentally-induced epilepsy. The protective actiyity of these drugs· was tested against pentylenetetrazole-induced epilepsy through the study of the changes in. the spontaneous electroencephalographic pattern by determining the count of the rapid waves (alpha and beta), slow waves (theta and delta),Ithe total wave count and the mean voltage. As well as the evoked brainactivities which includes the photic and sonic after effectl It was necessary to correlate the changes in the spontaneous EEG /attern and the evoked brain activities with the changes in the brain GABA, brain and serum electrolytes, blood glucose and liver glycogen content. To achieve this, the changes in these parameters following the administration of each. drug alone were compared with the changes following the conc~ent ~. administration of each drug with pentylenetetrazole.
