Studing The Effect Of Some Natural Products On Gastric Ulcer Induced In Rats

Gastric ulcer therapy faces a major drawback in modern days due to the unpredictable side effects of the long-term use of commercially available drugs. The search for antiulcer drugs with few or no side effects extends to the systematic development of natural products. Among these products are Ginkgo biloba (EGb761) and Pimpinella anisum (aniseed). They have long been recognized as an important source of therapeutically effective medicines, and the phytochemical analysis of these plants have yielded a number of compounds with gastro-protective activity. Some of these compounds are investigated in the present study. These are quercetin (flavonoid) present in both plants and trans-anethole (volatile oil) present only in aniseed.The present work was planned to study the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-ulcer properties of these natural products in two different models of acute ulcer induction:Part I:The first part of our study investigated the effect of misoprostol, EGb761, aniseed and their combinations with misoprostol on gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin and their effects on the content of gastric MDA, gastric SOD, plasma catalase, gastric GSH, gastric PGE2, and serum CRP.Part II:The second part investigated the effect of omeprazole, EGb761, aniseed, quercetin and trans-anethole on gastric ulcer induced by ethanol and their effects on the content of serum TAC, gastric NO2-, gastric MPO, gastric TNF-α and DNA fragmentation.
