Abstract:
The thesis falls in four parts :Part I :Review on the chemistry, structure and application of tetracycline, oxytetracycline and metronidazole.Part II :Determination of tetraycycline and oxytetracycline using 4-aminoantipyrine as an analytical reagent.Part III :New colorimetric method for determination of tetracycline and oxytetracycline via charge transfer complex formation.Nitration of teleacyclines leads to the formation of ortho- and para- dinitroderivatives. Tetrayclcines – dinitrodervialives act as electron-acceptor, and upon treatment with electron-donor as alkaline acetone or any ketone having an active methylene group, coloured complex products were developed, the colour can be measured spectrophotometrically at 350 and 355 mm for oxytetraycline and tetracycline, respectively.Part IV :In this part, a spectrophotometric method for determination of metronidazole is described. The method depends on formation of diazonium salts after reduction of metronidazole with zinc and hydrochloric acid, followed by reaction with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid. The diazoium salts formed are coupled with alkaline -napthhol, producing a red coloured complex which can be measured spectrophotometrically at 510 nm.
