Abstract:
The anti-inflammatory activity of various doses of diclofenac and piroxicam were assessed in normal and irradiated animals. Three models of inflammation have been chosen. These were:- The carrageenan induced oedema as a modle of acute inflammation.- The adjuvant induced arthritis in rats which mimics chronic inflammation, and- the sensitized perfused guinea pig lung as a modle of immediate type of hypersensitivity reaction. The drugs were tested at three dose levels. Diclofenca (1.3 and 5 mg/kg-1) and piroxicam (1.5 and 10 mg /kg-1) when given i.p. to rats were found to be effective in inhibiting the was oedema produced in both the acute and the chronic models of inflammation. The inhibition was dose dependent. The effect of the intensity of radiation on the sensititiy of animals to acut inflammation has been investiged at various radiation lelves (0.5 1 and 2 Gy). Results showd that the inflammatory respose induced by carrageenan in irradiated rats was markedly higher than that induced in normal animals.
