Pharmacognostical study (Iv ol (‘rinuin (isiatwurn L. cultivated in ILvp_t. c:imrn usiaricuin L. is a perennial herb cultivated in pnvate gardens belonging to the family Ainarylhdaceae. Bulb is laxative and used for urinary troubles. The bulb is crushed and roasted and used for treatment of rheumatism and piles and its leafjuice is used for ear-ache. These interesting uses of the plant stimulated the present work, which includes:Part I- Macro-and micromorpho logical study of the different organs viz. roots, fleshy scales, foliage leaves and inflorescence aiming toidentify and differentiate the different organs of the plant both in the entire and powdered fbrms.Part II- Isolation, identification and stnicture elucidation of the compounds contained in the plant.Part IPvlacro and micromorphology of C’ri,,u,n (ISiaticrini L.Chapter 1Macro fl) 01]) ho logyhabitat:(‘rinuni uslancuin L. shows a simile thu icated bulb, attaining a height of 40—45—5Ocm.The I)lHi1t flowers in April.I—The Root: fibrous, cylindrical measuring 3O—50—85cm in length and 0.2—0.5—0. 7cm in thickness, with numerous lateral rootlets, white in colour and has a slight odour and a mucilagenous bitter taste. I, 2—The Bulb: single, tunicated and conical in shape. It has a thick long aerial neck. It consists of white, thick succulent inner tunics and brownish outer tunics. Bulb measures 5-8-I 0cm iii length and 8-10-12cm in diameter, having a inucilagenous bitter taste.3—The foliage leaves: simple, sessile, possessing strap—shaped lamina, an entire undulated margin and acute apex, dark green to yellowish green in colour. The leaf measures 20-41-65cm in length and 2-5-7cm in width, odourless and of mucilagenotis bitter taste. The vennation is parallel.4-The inflorescence: terminal, racernose, 2-bracted umbel, carried on greenish scape which attains 35-45-55cm in length and 0.8-!- I .4cm in diameter. The flower is protected by two large spathaceotis bracts. It is odourless and of mucilagenoits hitter taste.The flower: white, pedicellate, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite. The perianth: white, consists of 6 perianth segments arranged in two alternated whorls. They connate below forming a tube. There are 6 free perianth segments with entire margins and acute apices.The androecium: consists of 6 epiphyllous stamens arranged in two whorls, each stamen consists of pale yellow anther which is composed of two anther lobes and a white filiform filament.The ynaecium: inferior and consists of 3 united carpels forming 3 chamber. Each chamber contains few anatropoLls ovtiles attached to an axial placentation.
