Abstract:
A great number of microencapsutation techniques are available for microencapsulating living cells. The technique of alginate-poly-(L-lysine)-alginate system is widely used, but it produces sometime fragile microcapsules and causes cell haemolysis. Other methods include-the emulsion procedure of a two phase system, the extrusion technique and. the coaxial-extrusion/interfacial-precipitation technique. However : the main disadvantages of the. extrusion techniques are the larger size of microcapsules, the fragile nature of microcapsules and capsule curing and recovery The interfacial polymerization (a chemical process depending on the generation of a polymer by - the reaction at the interface) has the advantage of producing semi permeable microcapsules having ultrathin membrane with a small and uniform size which may be preferred for the biomedical applications.
