Abstract:
The work in this thesis represents trials to formulate two analgesic drugs, namely ibuprofen and dextropropoxyphene hydrochloride in sustained release dosage forms. These two medicaments are highly recommended to be prescribed in sustained-release tablet form to fulfil their therapeutic actions with fruitful response. For this purpose various release retarding agents were tested for their suitability to prolong the in-vitro release of ibuprofen and dextropropoxyphene hydro-chloride tablets. The release retarding agents tried throughout the experimental work are natural hydrogenated food grade fats and oils represented by Gelucires 44/14, 50/0,2 and 50/13. Macromolecular polymers such as Rhodopas M, Rhodopas H, Eudragit RL100, RS100, RSPM, SI 00, LI 00, E100, L30D and E30D. Saturated hydrocarbons such as polystyrene, hyDROPhobic materials of waxy nature like carnuba wax, acid-resistant materials as shellac and other hyDROPhobic substances as ethylcellulose. The techniques adopted for making use of these retardants are matrix embedding, pan-coating and micro-encapsulation
