Abstract:
The microbial contamination of a total of 144 samples of baby formulas was surveyed. These samples included 36 containers representing 12 types of milk (all were produced by foreign manufacturers); 45 containers representing 15 types of food (produced by local or foreign manufacturers); 21 containers representing 7 specialities of locally prod¬uced liquid oral pediatric pharmaceutical preparations, and 42 containers representing 14 specialities of pediatric phar¬maceutical preparations for external use (produced by local or foreign manufacturers).The microbiological examination included the determi¬nation of total aerobic viable bacterial count, fungal count, isolation and identification of aerobic bacterial contami-nants, qualitative tests for pathogenic and other hazardous microorganisms, namely Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Proteus spp ., Pseudomonas spp, In addition, qualitative ... tests for the presence of Clostridia. in the powdered pharma¬ceutical preparations intended for external use. Also, isolation and identification of yeasts, as well as tests for the detection of aflatoxin producing fungi.
