Abstract:
Hypnea uciforrnj (Wu1f.) Lamx. (Fam. Hypneaceae)is a red alga (Rhodophyta) that spreads over the 1editer— ranean coast, especially on the Egyptian area. In the present work, th.e phtocheidca1, as well as, biological investigations of this alga were carried out.hytochemica1 investigation of the alga included:I. Pre1ininary phytochernica]. screening and proximate analysis: This includedi1— Preliminary phytochemical screeiing:This revealed the presence of carbohydrates, unsaturated sterols and traces 0±’ amorphous subliniable matter. Volatile substances, sinple phenols, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, cardenolides, saponins and oxidaze enzyme were absent in the investigated alga.2— Ipximate _ana1yss:Certain Pharmacopcoal ccnstants9 nainly: moisture(10 %); ash (12.89 %) acid insohii1e ash (6.05 %), water soluble ash (4.25 %) v!ater insoluble ash (864 %),crude fibre (5.35 %), extractives using hexane (00,200 %)ether (00.210%), ethanol 90 percent (10.700 %), ethanol 50 % (21.200 %) and water (30.000 %) were carried out. These constants are helpful for the determination of the purity and identity of the thalli of .Hypnea niuscifortnis (Wuif.)
