Abstract:
The effect of lithium on some brain minerals, neurotransmitters, free amino acids and phosphate buffer-insoluble brain polypeptides was investigated. The affects of intraperitoneal injection of two doses (75 and 150 ,mg/Kg ) of lithium carbonate ware studied on 7 groups of rats.Brain dopamine content was significantly decreased by two nours, two weeks and one month of administration. Moreover, brain histamine content was significantly reduced. by both acute and sub-acute administration, while chronic administration significantly increased, brain histamine content by both therapeutic and elevated doses. The inhibitory action of lithium , on c AMP synthesis can be explained by decreased concentration of dopamine and histamine which play a role in the synthesis of cyclic.Lithium decreased GABA under the different condit¬ions of dosing this could .be due to inhibition of glutamic decarboxylase. Similar effects on glyoine -content In brain were shown, by lithium administration.
