Abstract:
Indomethacin is an efficient anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic agent which is frequently prescrib¬ed especially in rheumatic conditions. Comparable to other .anti-inflammatory drugs, it causes side effects, mainly gastrointestinal irritation. Indomethacin causes such, irr¬itations throughout the gastrointestinal tract due to local and systemic effects. Other frequent complaints concern the central nervous system such as headache, vertigo, and-dizziness.It has teen reported that such side effects are doss dependent and are enhanced or increasing indomethaoin absorption. Accordingly, formulating a controlled-release dos¬age form would be advantageous. Besides minimizing the systemic side effects, local gastrointestinal irritation can be considerably decreased by avoiding the presence of indomethacin in a large concentration at a particular spot. Also, the resulting prolongation in the therapeutic action la favourable due to achieving prolonged relief of the ann¬oying rheumatic pains. That is besides the advantages, of decreasing dosage frequency. Moreover, sustained serum lev¬els are thought to be related to the efficacy of anti-inflammatory compounds.
