Abstract:
Physalis peruviana L. is widely cultivated in Egypttheir edible fruits which are eaten as dessert while eother vegetative parts are considered as by product. twas stated in the literature that several Physalis ecies contain the active constituents withanolides, e of which proved to have antitumour activity and anti edant property for larvae of lepidopterous insect cotton worm). Physalins which are related to with nolides, together with some alkaloids of the solanaceous type. <The plant was subjected to a comprehensive pharma•cognostical study to find out its potentialities as a source of these constituents.This work dealt with the morphological study, a phyto— chemical investigation, together with a preliminary micro biological and anticancer screening. I: Macro and Micromorphological study of Physalis peruviana L. growing in Egypt:Chapter I: Macromorphology: P. peruviana L. is an annual herb, attaining 45—90 cm in height and flowers from March to May, and fruits from ipril to Dune.The root is a typical tap root system, the main root attaining about 20 cm in length and 1.5-2 cm in diameter.
