Abstract:
The effect of parasitologic cure of S- mansoni infection on liver fibrosis inmicc was exmined . Praziquantel (250 mg /kg body weight )or oxamniquine (60 mg /kg body weight )were administered oraddy to mice 8 weeks after infection with 50S. mansoni cercariae .Laver fibrosis was assessed by chemical measurement of coalagen as hydroxyproline , and at 10and 20 weeks post – treatment . The extent of infection was monitored by the worm oad and the iver egg counts . Thebody and liver weights were recorded at each of these levels . Mortality within each of the groups was assessed by exclusion of killed mice from subsequent calculations .Mice with untreated S. mansoni infection showed steady accumulation of liver coagon as compared with norma mice . Liver hydroxyproline concentration – taken as an index of the collagen content – averaged 15- fold norma l at 28 weeks after infection . Mice treated with oxamniquine or praziquantel shwed aprompt decrease in S. mansoni liver egg load with no living eggs 15 weeks after treatment . Prazi- quantel was effectice in partially reversing the fibrotic reaction with in the condition . Praziquantal was aso more effective than oxamniquine. `
