Abstract:
Urinary tract infection is the commonest disease of urinary tract and several rapid screening procedures have been recommended for estimation of urine specimens to decide whether or not a sample contains of a gram-stained smear of fresh, unceatrifuged urine and the catalase activity of fresh urine. For isolation of E.coli , direct plating of the specimen on selective and differential media done e.g., MacConkey agar , E.M.B. agar , bromocresol purple-lactose agar,.. Several of more recently developmed and commercially available biochemical tests for Enterobacteriaceae ( E. coli ) were evaluated that are required to identify all potential pathogens rapidly and accurately . A simplified biochemical routine was developed for thus purpose consisting of: triple sugar iron agar; urea agar; indole ; Methyl red ; Voges proskauer Phenylalanine ; Motility ; Pot-cyanide ; Moeller’s 4-tube decarboxylases and citrate utilization test. Susceptibility testing is routinely performed usually by either the disc diffusion technique or a dilution method.
