1. the preliminary phytohemioal study of the powderea aerial parts of Moltkiopsis ciliata (Forssk). revealed the probable presence of glycosides and/or carbohydrates, sterolsand/or tritex’penes, flavonoids, nitrogenous bases, condensed tannins aild saponins.2. The moisture content, total ash and acid—insoluble ash were determined according to the Egyptian Pharmacopoeia and were found to be 21,17.1,8% respectively.3. The successive extraction of the plant with selectiveorganic solvents and examination 0±’ the respective extracts revealed the presence of sterols and/or triterpenes and pigments in the light petroleum and etherial extract and flavo— noides in the alcohol extract.4. Five crystalline materials were isolated from the light petroleum extract:Materi_’: white needles crystals m.p. 136—137°C, yield0.025%. It was coffirmed. to be B—sitosterol. It forms anacetyl derivative, m.p. 126—127°C.Materia1”: occurs as white crystalline plates m.p. 73—74°C, yield 0.085% and was characterised as aliphatic alcohol, molecular formula C H 0. It characterisation was establi—-2141shed on the basis o± the elemental analysis, IR and it forms an acetyl derivative m.p. 105—106°C.The fruit: $imple, schizocarpic carcerulus, nutlets being pyramidal in shape with yellowish—brown pex’icarp showing two scars. The fruit having 4 nutlets each containing a single seed. The outer surface of the pericarp, yellowish—brown— glabrous, smooth and shiny. The seed: Elongated ovoid to pyraraidal, with thin, leathery, yellowish—brown, glabrous, shining testa. The raphé running as yellowish line along the acute edge from the hilum to the distal end. The seed, exalbuminous with remains of endosperm surrounding, a re1ative]y large straight embryo composed of 2 white cotyledons and a radicle. The root: Oboonical, spirally twisted, pale brown in colour. The fresh being flexible while the dry having short fracture outside and a fibrous fracture inside.B Miccoica1 cho,ractrs1. The leafLeaf, isobilaberal, palisode being discontinuous in. the region of the midrib. The upper and.lower epidermis composed of polygonal cells with straight antidilnal wells and thick smooth cuticle; the neural epidermal cells being subrectangular and. axially elongated.Stomata, oval, anomocytic and occurring. on both epi— dermises, stomatal index being 14.94 to 15.03 to 15.58.
