Abstract:
Summary and conclusionThe sffect of schistosomal infection and of oxamniquine treatment on worm distribution, oogram as well as on lipid methobolism of both host (hamste. S) and parasites was studied. Furthermore, the study was extended to in clued the effect of the drug on plasma lipid pattern of bilharzial patients with simple and hepatosplenomegalic schistosomiasis.Effect of oxamniquine on worm distribution and oogram:It was found that the highest dose of oxamiquine (50 mg/kg) given intramuscularly as a single injection to infected male hamsters induced a complete cure of the animals evidence by shift of worms to the liver, decreased worm burden, oocram changes and decreased number of ova in the liver.Effect of schistosomal infection on host lipids:Infection decreased the plama levels of cholesterol esters and triglycerides. The lelve of cholesterol, fred fatty acids and phospholipids have not been affected in male hamsters. In female hamsters, infection decreased the plasma levels of cholesterol ester, free fatty acids and phospholipids.
