Abstract:
Summary and ConclusionsL-DOPA is a drug which has been successfully used in the treatment of parkinsonism, Propanolol, on the other hand, is of a widespread use in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia and hypertension. Since these drugs might be concurrently administered with other drugs such as sulphonylureas, we investigated the combined effect of L-DOPA or propanolol with tolbutamide or glibenclamide on certain aspects of carbohyd¬rate metabolism. The reason for choosing L-DOPA and propanolol is based on the findings that they induce marked changesin carbohydrate metabolism particularly blood glucose leveland plasma insulin activity. For the purpose of investigations, male albino rats weigh¬ing from 170-210 gm were divided into groups of six rats each.Tolbutamide sodium (100, 150 and 200 mg/kg) or glibenclamide sodium, (0.5, 0.75 and 1mg/kg) was injected I.P. in rats in six groups. Two additional groups were served as controls for tolbutamide sodium and glibenclamide sodium respectively. Other groups were used for L-DOPA (200 mg/kg I.P.), L-DOPA (200 mg/Kg I.P.) + tolbutamide (150 mg/kg I.P.) and L-DOPA (200 mg/kg I.P.) + glibenclaraide (0.75 mg/kg I,P..)
