Abstract:
cystoseira fimbriata (Desf.) Bory (Fain. Cystoseiraceae) is a brown algae (Phaophyta) that spreada over the Mediterranean#mt especially on the EgyptianIn the present work, the phytochemical as well as,biologioal investigationsof this algaw carried A. Phytochemjca1 investigatign gf the a1ga incuded: I. Preliminary phytoghemical sereeniandproxiinate analysis : 1— <This revealed the presence of carbohydatee , unsaturated storols , phenol-ic -compound(s) , traces of lactones and / o esters and traces of a sublimable matter. Volatile substances, flavonoids, glycosides , alkaloids and / or nitrogenous bases , saponins and oxidase enzyme were absent in the investigated alga 2— Proximate analysis :Certain pharm.acopoeal constants were mainly moisture (14.28 % ), ash (12.7{. % ), acid insoluble ash(5.07 water soluble ash(4.38 %), water insoluble ash(8.4 ), crude fibres (6.3 %), extractives using hexane (0.1 %), <I, Biological sceening: A. Antiturao study: Effects of different dilutions of extracts pepaed from the alga on viability of Ehflich ascites carcinoma vfto was studied, The extract was active at ccnoentations of 1 , 2.5 , 5 and 10 ag. / Ten mg./ ml. oonoentation showed the maximum activity ( 100 pe cent non — viable cells). The effect of different dilutions of the extract showed a minimum effective con— centration on oe1]2in vivo at a dose level of 10 mg./hg.of male Swiss albino mice weighing l — 22 g. At the higheet dose used 500 mg./kg. , the extract was not toxic and cytolysis was observed . At the minimum effective dose, cell vaculization and cell membrane abuot*,n were the main cytomophological effect observed. B. Antimicrobial study:Ten pe cent of an aqueous oztrot of the alga wasfound inactive against a subtilis , Mycobactei’ium phlei , Sacina lutea ,>Neissejia species, Esoudomonas aeuginosa ,niger and CandidaII. Isolation of the activocompoumds 41. Antimicrobial active substance:Ethanolic (80 ) exract after concentration andpurification by extraction with ethyl acetate.
