Abstract:
The aim of this study compared left atrial diameter and left atrial volume in assessment of left atrial remodeling and their respective association to these markes of thromboembolic risk in patients with Mitral Stenosis (MS) in Sinus Rhythm (SR) to guide the decision for Anticoagulation in these patients which may lead to significant change in their management We show that use of LA diameter or LA volume to guide the decision to use anticoagulants in patients with MS in SR may markedly affect patients management. The study showed the followings: 1.In group I, there were 8 patients with stroke and in patients of group II, there were no thromboembolic events with highly significant diference between both the examined groups 2 In group I, the LAD was ranged from 40-84 mm with mean ± SD of 51.4 ± 9.8 and in group II it was ranged from 34 - 52 mm with mean ± SD of 42.7 ± 5.7, with significant difference between the examined groups3 In group I, the LAV was ranged from 63.19 - 232.5 ml with mean ± SD of 115.5 ± 36.8 and in group II it was ranged from 65.7-120.22 ml with mean ± SD of 89.3 ± 19.5, with significant difference between the examined groups4.In group I, the LAAEV was ranged from 9 - 22.3 cm/second with mean ± SD of 15.5 ± 3.8 and in group II, it was ranged from 25.2-45.3 cm/second with mean ± SD of 31.49 ± 7.3, with highly significant difference between the examined groups.5. LA diameter showed significant negative correlation with both LAAEv and LAAFv, significant positive correlation with SEC density and non-significant negative correlation with LA thrombus6 LA volume showed significant negative correlation with LAAEv and significant positive correlation with SEC density and LA thrombus.
