Prevalence And Clinical Characteristics Of Headache Among Medical Students Of Zagazig University

This survey was conducted on the population of undergraduate students of the college of medicine, Zagazig University, Sharkia governorate.The population comprised first to sixth year medical students in the period from October 2010 to May 2011.The aim of this study was to detect the total and specific prevalence of primary headache in medical students. We investigated the 1-year prevalence, clinical features and mode of treatment of headache in our students using a self-administered headache questionnaire.The total number of students in the faculty of medicine Zagazig University at the time of our study was 4222 and the estimated sample size was 420 students. The age of our subjects with mean age was 20 years (range 17 to 23 years).Headache prevalence was 11.3% being higher in females than males (12.2% vs. 10.6.1%) with no statistical significance differences was detected .The overall prevalence of migraine was 5.4% with higher prevalece in females as well (7.8%) than males (1.9%) and the difference was statistically significant, While the overall prevalence of TTH was 4.1% with a prevalence of (7.7%) in males and (1.4%) in females and the difference was of statistical significance. So, migraine prevalence was slightly higher than that of TTH with no significant difference while distribution across sexes was more evident. (1.6%) of students met both migraine and TTH criteria..
