Abstract:
The objective of this study is to determine the volume of several brain compartments in a reference population of healthy subjects to analyze gender-related differences and changes with age providing normative data and possibility to relate individual data to a larger population.Design: The present study was designed to use magnetic resonance imaging to assess normal volume of the intra cranial cavity, cerebrum, brain stem, white matter, gray matter, total brain, cerebro spinal fluid and the cerebellum, to evaluate gender-related differences and changes with age.Material and Methods: In the present work, Two hundred subjects of both sexes who had normal MRI, including 120 males and 80 females aged from 20 years to 80 years. These subjects were accurately chosen from MRI unit of radiodiagnosis department in Zagazig university hospital. The chosen subjects were classified into three age groups, each of which included males and females, the first aged 20-39 years, the second aged 40-59 years and the third aged 60-80 years. Results: In the present study, the age-related changes of the intra cranial volume showed a statistical non significant decrease in its mean value of this parameter from age of 20 years till age of 80 years. It was found that age-related decrease was encountered in the volume of cerebellum, brain stem, cerebrum, WM, GM and total brain from 20 years to 80 years old in both males and females. On the other hand it showed that there was age-related increase in the volume of CSF from 20 to 80 years old in both males and females. Considering, the sex-related changes, the obtained results showed significant statistical difference between male and female in the volumes of the all measured parameter in the three age groups. Moreover, no sex difference was evident as regard the value of CSF volume which showed non significant difference between male and female. Conclusion: This work concluded that the mean value of different brain compartment volumes in adult male and female. These values considered a base may be used in further statistical studies, e.g., to track individual changes with time (aging, CNS diseases, therapeutical interventions.Key words: intra cranial cavity; cerebrum; brain stem; white matter; gray matter; total brain; Csf; cerebellum; measurement; normal anatomy; MRI
