Abstract:
The present study was planned to evaluate the efficacy of three regimens of palliative radiotherapy for bone metstasis in breast cancer patients.The study included 60 patients with painful bone metastasis treated in Clinical oncology department,Zagazig university Hospital between March 2011 and January 2012.All patients were subjected to history taking,general examination,local examination,laboratory and radiological investigations.All eligible patients were allocated to in three groups:-group(A) :treated with 8Gy in single fraction of RT- group(B):treated with 20Gy in five fractions of RT-group(A):treated with 30Gy in ten fractions of RT(studied retrospectively)For all patients, pain intensity was assessed by 4-categorical pain scale And pain score recorded initially befor treatment and 2,4 and 8 weeks After treatment.Also analgesic requirement was assessed initially and 2,4 and 8 weeks after RT using 4-point scale.Performance status of all included patients was assessed by karnofesky Score before and 8 weeks after RT.The best results were observed 8 weeks after RT that,complete response Was achieved by 25% in group A and B and by 30% in group C respectively.When considering the over all response at 8 weeks after RT were 85%,90% and 95% in group A,B and C respectively with no significant Difference between the three groups.Also radiation toxicity were assessed 8 weeks after RT,the results revealed that treatment was well tolerated in the three groups with no significant difference.Also there was no significant difference between the three groups as regardOther prognostic factors as performance status and site of bone metastasis.
