Abstract:
Skin tags are small skin colored to dark brown sessile or pedunculated papillomas commonly occurring on the neck, frequently seen in the axillae and eyelids, less often on the trunk and groin .Both sexes have the same incidence BHistopathologicallyThe presence of skin tags on the neck is a common finding , they may represent a cosmetic concern occasionally they become irritated or necrotic and then become painful .Skin tags are generally ignored. In the last years the finding of multiple skin tags has been associated with abnormalities in the glucose metabolism specially type II diabetes and hyperinsulinemia Skin tags are considered a diagnostic clue to impaired carbohydrate metabolismThere are reports describing an association between skin tags and an atherogenic lipid profile. This lipid profile is thought to be strongly associated with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseasesSkin tags are cutaneous finding frequently associated with the risk factors of metabolic syndrome and heart diseases (obesity ,hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance) . Patients with elevated high sensitive C reactive protein ( hr-CRP) , glucose , heamoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and uric acid level and skin tags, should be carefully evaluated for metabolic syndrome and heart diseasestin a 16-kDa protein, is a product of the obese gene (ob),produced mainly by adipocytes including those in subcutaneous tissue. It is involved in the regulations of appetite and energy expenditure. Leptin receptors are produced most abundantly in the brain but are also present in several peripheral tissues as keratinocytes, adipose tissue ,adrenal cortex, and pancreatic B cellsThe hormone leptin is best known as a lipostatic signal serving as a key regulator of food intake . Obesity and aging can lead to increased leptin concentration which are due to dysfunctional leptin signaling , and not associated with reduced food intake and subsequent weight loss. The loss of metabolic control may have broad physiological consequences affecting all body tissues , including its largest organ: skinLeptin displays a strong association with obesity and insulin resistance Leptin has been found to stimulate the proliferation of various cell types and is therefore considered a new growth factor.
