Abstract:
Recurrent abdominal pain is a common problem in childhoodworldwide It was defmed by Apley in 1958 as a three episodes ofpain in a three month period and is severe enough to affect childactivities. H pylori is a gram negative bacterium involved in thepathogenesis of variety of gastro intestinal diseases including pepticulcer and gastric cancer. H pylori infection is acquired mainly inchildhood, especially in developing countries. where the influenceof socioeconomic factors on the prevalence of H pylori has beenshown .association between RAP and H pylori is controversial.Infection with H pylori has been shown to cause chronic gastritis inessentially all infected. Some infected children also develop pepticulcer disease. Inflammatory changes occur in symptomatic as well asasymptomatic children. Childhood is the critical time for acquisitionof H pylori infection . consequently attempts have been made toverify or reject the hypothesis of a causal association betweeninfection and childhood gastrointestinal symptoms , includingrecurrent abdominal pain . RAP is said to have an organic cause inonly 5% of investigated cases. The present study was intended toassess the prevalence of H pylori infection in children with recurrentabdominal pain attending the out patient pediatric clinic of Zagaziguniversity hospital.
