congenital cataract is lens opacity in pediatric group of people.the main manifestation of cataract is a worsening of vision. the symptoms depend on position of the opacity, size of the opacity, number of the opacities, density of the opacities and bilaterality.in visual acuity testing, we must know the normal visual behavior of infants. the type of tests we chose depend on the age group.visual acuity assessment, complete ocular examination under general anathesia and pediatric consultation with investigations preoperatively should be done for all patients having congenital cataract.the critical period for visual development in unilateral cases is 17 weeks while for bilateral cases is not definitely known but the infant should be operated before age of three months after this time nystagmus occurs due to sensory deprivation. pupil dilatation should be performed preoperatively.
