Prevalence And Clinical Outcome Of Metabolic Syndrome in Hemorrhagic Stroke Patients

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of several interrelated metabolic risk factors of atherosclerotic arterial disease. Although insulin resistance is present in a majority of people with the MetS, the IDF found insufficient evidence for a causal link between the two, a statement that agreed with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which published its concerns about the lack of certainty regarding the causative pathogenesis of insulin resistance and its utility as a marker for CVD.The association between MetS and stroke has been confirmed in other populations integrated by elderly subjects, and the frequency of MetS has been reported to be significantly higher in patients with a history of athero thrombotic or non embolic ischemic stroke and also heamorrhagic strokeIn recent years, metabolic syndrome has attracted interest as a possible predictive factor for cerebral stroke. To date, no studies have been conducted to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in hemorrhagic stroke patients. In fact, few studies have evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome and sroke either ischemic or hemorrhagic. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in hemorrhagic stroke patients, to determine if there was a doseresponse relationship between the number of MetS components and mortality of patients with heamorrhagic stroke and to detemine the relative risk of each factor and the predictor of mortality in those patients who were admitted to stroke subunit of medical ICU of Zagazig University in the period from january 2011 to september 2011, A total number of 300 patients were included in the work presenting with hemorrhagic stroke.
