Abstract:
The first human liver transplant was carried out by Thomas Starzl in Denver, Colorado, USA in 1963 in a child with biliary atresia. Many other advances have been made in the past three decades. Improvements in preoperative assessment and medical management of potential transplant candidates as well as better peri-operative and post-transplant care have undoubtedly enhanced outcomes. Progress in the treatment of infective complications and the development of more selective immunosuppressive agents have seen survival approaching 90% at one year. With increasing experience and due to technical developments, living-related liver donation of liver segments II and III has matured as a standard procedure in pediatric liver transplantation. A transplant survival rate of 94% during the first year after grafting can be achieved with this method.
