Abstract:
hemostasis describes a complex process through which bleeding stops spontaneously following injury, and blood is maintained in the liquid state. a complete balance of the body’s tendency towards clotting and bleeding is maintained.hemostasis is achieved through the interaction of several systems, which include the vascular system, the coagulation system, the fibrinolytic system, and platelets, as well as the kinin system, serine protease inhibitors and the complement system.laboratory tests of hemostasis can be classified into; tests for primary hemostasis (platelet phase), tests for secondary hemostasis (coagulation phase), tests for regulation of hemostasis (physiologic inhibitors and fibrinolyticsystem) and miscellaneous.tests for primary hemostasis include first line and second line tests. the first line tests include platelet count, mean platelet volume, bleeding time as well as platelet function analyzer.the second line tests include platelet function tests, detection of platelet antibodies and assessment of vov willibrand factor.platelet function tests include adhesion tests, aggregation tests, point of care assays, flow cytometry, impact cone and platelet analyzer and thromboxane b2.detection of platelet antibodies include phase i, phase ii and phase iii assays.
