A Clinical Study of Rotavirus Gastroenteritis

This study has been designed to highlight on the clinico laboratory manifestation of rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) in our community. 100 stool and blood samples were collected from 100 patients with acute gastroenteritis with their ages <3 years. Blood samples were tested for CBC and C-reactive protein . All stool samples were subjected to macroscopic examination for consistency, color, pH and the presence of mucous or frank blood to exclude bacterial cause of gastroenteritis (GE). And then microscopic examination for fecal leucocytes and erythrocytes by (methylen blue stained film), parasites by (Fresh wet mount) and Qualitative Fecal Fat Microscopy by (Fresh wet mount). eighteen patients (18%) were non-viral causes of gastroenteritis; bacterial and parasitic causes whom were excluded from the study, eighty tow (82%) were tested for rotavirus antigen by immuno-chromatography.Rotavirus was the most common pathogen in viral diarrhea among children in our locality (42%). So we need for further larger studies that involve larger number of cases of GE all over our country in order to confirm these results, unmask the true incidence of RV in cases of GE, provide a broader picture of the burden of RV in children all over Egyptian country and to include RV vaccination in our national compulsory immunization schedule.
