Abstract:
This study is initiated in order to study the purpose of magnetic resonance imaging in epilepsy patients to identify underlying structural abnormalities that require specific treatment (ie, surgery in most instances) and also to aid in formulating a syndromic or etiologic diagnosis. With recent advances in techniques, previously undetectable subtle structural abnormalities are now routinely demonstrated by MR imaging. Advanced MRI techniqes led to more accurate diagnosis of the pathologic focus of epilepsy including hippocampal sclerosis, malformations of cortical development, neoplasms, vascular abnormalities, infections and miscellaneous abnormalities, which is essential for accurate classification, determination of prognosis, and surgical treatment. Advanced MRI has greatly reduced the need for invasive electroencephalographic evaluation of patients with intractable epilepsy and has therefore reduced morbidity.
