Abstract:
Apelin is a peptide hormone recently identified as an endogenous ligand for the Gi protein-coupled, angiotensin receptor-like receptor APJ. Apelin and APJ have a widespread distribution in the body; they are expressed in the brain, kidney, adipose tissue, heart, lung, retina, mammary gland and gastrointestinal tract. Exercise was proved to increase apelin expression in cardiac myocytes, but its effect on circulating apelin levels is not known up to the date of this work. Therefore, this work was done to explore the effect of continuous and intermittent exercise on circulating apelin levels in different metabolic situations (normal, HFD, STZ induced diabetes). The study was done on 84 male albino rats, rats were divided into 3 main groups: group I (lean), group II (HFD), group III (STZ induced diabetes), each group further subdivided into 3 subgroups:Group A: control group with sedentary life.Group B: Rats were exposed to continuous exercise.Group C: Rats were exposed to intermittent exercise. The results of the present study:In lean group, there was significant increase in serum apelin levels in both continuous and intermittent exercised groups. In HFD group, there was significant reduction in serum apelin levels in both continuous and intermittent exercised groups when compared with the elevated levels in control HFD group. In STZ induced diabetic group, there was significant increase in serum apelin levels in both continuous and intermittent exercised groups. In conclusion:* Exercise has regulatory effect on circulating apelin levels.* Intermittent exercise has more significant regulatory effect on circulating apelin levels than continuous exercise.- In lean & STZ induced diabetic groups the regulation is mainly by insulin and BMI.- In HFD group, the apelin levels in HFD control group were elevated compensatory to increased insulin and apelin resistances, therefore continuous and intermittent exercise reduced this elevation by decrease insulin resistance.Key words: Apelin- APJ receptors.
