Abstract:
PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate computed tomography (CT) for detection of solid organ injuries in patients with blunt abdominal trauma. Methods: fifty hemodynamically stable patients out of ninety five with suspicion of blunt abdominal trauma were included in the study with exclution of pregnant females a . Admission data for clinical examination, sonography, radiographic findings were recorded. Each patient underwent helical abdominal CT.Results: CT findings were solid organ injury only (n = 46), free fluid only (n = 5), false positive only (n = 1), splenic injuries only (n = 19),hepatic injuries only (n = 14),renal injuries only (n = 12), pancreatic injuries only (n = 1), Based on these data, sensitivity was 100% , specificity was 63% and accuracy was 98%.Conclusion:Computed tomography (CT) has shown to be useful in detection of injuries to solid organ , hollow viscera, spine and pelvis and contrast material extravasation from actively bleeding arterial injuries.CT room in trauma centers must be near to emergency room with well trained radiologist to extract the data from examination.CT images should be reviewed before removing the patient from the CT unit..
