Role of Helical Computed Tomography in Diagnosis of Solid Renal Masses

Although, solid renal masses encountered many different lesions (pseudo-tumors, traumatic and inflammatory), renal cell carcinoma occupies the large percentage of that lesions. Renal cell carcinoma is the third most common malignancy in urology. CT is the most important imaging technique for evaluation of renal lesions and preoperative staging of renal cell carcinoma.The recent introduction of helical CT into clinical practice has allowed radiologists to overcome most of the limitations of ultrasound. The high spatial resolution obtained with high resolution protocols makes this technique particularly suitable for the assessment of abdominal pathology and for the evaluation of renal neoplasms. Ultrasonography has a limited role in differentiation and staging of renal tumors.
