Congenital cardiac malformations in infants with apparently isolated gastrointestinal malformations

Git malformations range from minor to serious and they can occur anywhere from the esophagus to the anus. These defects may appear as isolated defects or in association with anomalies of other systems and chromosomal abnormalities.In these patients the frequency of congenital cardiac malformations is known to be high, with high mortality than those without congenital cardiac malformations.So we aimed in our study to investigate the frequency and types of associated congenital cardiac malformations in infants with apparently isolated gastro intestinal malformations using different diagnostic methods as clinical examination, chest x ray, ECG and echocardiography screening.we found the best and the most accurate method was the echocardiography. So we in forcing the opinion that the clinical examination, electrocardiography, and radiography are insufficient in the early neonatal period to detect congenital heart disease.In our study we acted upon 61 neonates with apparently isolated gastrointestinal malformations, most of them were male. We found that the most common gastrointestinal malformations were anal atresia.On echocardiography screening we found the incidence of CCM among patients with apparently isolated gastrointestinal malformations was 31.1%. The atrial septal defect of secondum type was the most common congenital cardiac malformations.
