Evaluation of infection control in primary health care centers at Zagazig district

Abstract:
to improve the quality of primary health care centers at Zagazig district through the following objectives: 1- Assessment of the applied IC procedures at the primary care centers. 2- Assessmet of the knowledge and practice of HCP about IC procedures. 3- Application of health education program to improve knowledge and practice of health care providers after health education program. 4- Compare between IC system in accredited and non accredited primary health care (PHC) centers.Subjects and methods: An intervention study was carried out in randomly selected two accredited and six non-accredited primary health care centers at Zagazig district, Sharkia governorate. The number of HCP participating in the study was 29 (from accredited PHC facilities): 73 (from non accredited PHC facilities).Observational checklist was used to assess the application of IC procedures in the selected centers. Assessment of the knowledge and practice of HCP was done using questionnaires and checklists. Health education and training program was applied to improve knowledge and practice then evaluation was done after three months.Results: the accredited health centers had a mean score higher than non-accredited centers regarding most areas of IC. There were significant improvement in the knowledge and practice of HCP in accredited and non-accredited PHC facilities. There was no statistical significant difference concerning the knowledge of HCP about IC in the accredited and non-accredited PHC facilities (p value > 0.05).The practice of HCP in the accredited PHC facilities was significantly higher than the non-accredited as regard PPE and aseptic technique (p value ≤ 0.05).
