Abstract:
an acute flaccid paralysis in an infant or child constitutes a very important pediatric neurology emergency. Since the eradication of polio in most parts of world, Guillain Barre syndrome has become the most common cause of flaccid paralysis.Guillain Barre syndrome seems to be the result of an immunologic process activated by infectious agents or certain live vaccines. Only a few cases of acute Polyradicular neuritis have been reported in patients with increasing levels of lgG and lgM antibodies directed against toxoplasma gondii. The purpose of this study was to assess how far toxoplasmosis contributes to the cases of acute flaccid paralysis among children. As far as it has been reviewed; the present study in Egypt may be the first to accuse Toxoplasma as a one of the causative agents of AFP in a survey study. There is only some reports for few cases outside Egypt.Over a period from January 2005 and December 2010. One hundred patients suffering from non-polio acute flaccid paralysis were included in this study. The patients were classified into three groups:1. Acute flaccid paralysis with acute toxoplasmosis on basis of anti Toxoplasma IgM seropositivity.2. Acute flaccid paralysis with chronic toxoplasmosis on basis of anti-Toxoplasma IgM seronegativity and IgG seropositivity.3. Acute flaccid paralysis without toxoplasmosis on basis of negative antitoxoplasma serology.
