Abstract:
This is an interventional cross section study that had been carried out in the outpatient clinic and gastrointestinal endoscopy unit (Internal Medicine Department) in collaboration with Departments of Interventional Radiology and General Surgery, Zagazig University Hospitals, from January 2009 to July 2010. All patients presented with acute LGIB who were admitted to the gastroenterology units during the study period and who fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study.Sampling included cases which resolve with conservative medical measures as well as those who need surgical intervention to control bleeding. The aim of this study: is to search the common etiological causes of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding, to detect the relation between etiological causes and the severity of the bleeding, to discuss the diagnostic procedures available and suitable for every patient according to clinical situation, presence of equipment, and experienced personnel, to compare the treatment options and decide on the best in each case depending on the short term outcome to control bleeding, prevent or minimize rebleeding and decrease mortality. Methods: This study was carried out on 100 adult patients (63 male and 37 female) and were divided in to two groups according to the risk score Group I (High risk group) include 39 patients (24 male and 15 female) with an age range of (21-78 years).Group II (Moderate risk group) include 61 patients (39 male and 22 female) with an age range of (18 – 65 years).
