Abstract:
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary hepatic malignancy worldwide, with an increasing incidence in western countries (Bosch et al,2004).It is the most common cause of death in patients with cirrhosis and accounts for 5.6% of all cancers. It is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third most common cause of cancer death (Bosch et al., 2004). It is accounting for over half a million deaths per year (Kirk et al, 2006).Many risk factors seem to predispose HCC, which either present individually or collectively depending on the environmental situations. In a majority of cases, HCC occurs in the setting of cirrhosis with underlying chronic viral hepatitis (B or C) or alcoholism and more recently with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. In western countries, HCC is associated in up to 80% of cases with chronic liver damage (Schafer et al,1999).The diagnosis is often made at an advanced tumour stage, precluding curative options such as surgical resection, transplantation or local ablation therapy. The aim of this study was to see the pattern of clinical presentation, identify the possible risk factors and the clinical outcome among HCC patients presenting at our hospital.
